Environmental and Behavioural Indicators
Closed cultures reveal themselves through the environment and through behaviour — if you know what to look for. This module develops your observational skills.
Learning Objectives
- Identify physical environmental indicators of closed culture
- Recognise behavioural patterns in staff, management, and service users
- Understand the significance of what is absent — the missing evidence
- Develop a systematic approach to environmental observation
What to Look For
The environment: Locked doors that shouldn’t be locked. Cameras pointed at staff, not at risk areas. Bedrooms that all look the same. Personal belongings that are absent or institutional.
The behaviour: Staff who speak for residents. Managers who control information flow. Service users who are quiet — not calm, but subdued. Families who have stopped visiting.
