Recognising Abuse and Neglect
Abuse is not always obvious. Neglect is not always intentional. This module develops your ability to see what is really happening — not just what is being presented to you.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the 10 categories of abuse defined in the Care Act 2014
- Recognise indicators of abuse that are often missed or normalised
- Understand the difference between poor practice and abuse
- Develop observational skills that go beyond surface-level assessment
Categories of Abuse
Physical, Sexual, Psychological/Emotional, Financial/Material, Neglect and Acts of Omission, Discriminatory, Organisational, Domestic Abuse, Modern Slavery, Self-Neglect.
The hardest abuse to spot is the abuse that has been normalised. When staff say “that’s just how we do things here” — that is the moment to pay attention.
